All the Queens Houses

Rafael Herrin-Ferri in conversation with Joseph Heathcott

Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. The Architectural League of New York

The event is free, but registration is required: register here.

All the Queens Houses is an ongoing photographic survey by architect/artist Herrin-Ferri of the (in)formal qualities of the borough’s attached, semi-detached, and detached houses and small apartment buildings. The survey explores the themes of identity, differentiation, and adaptation in the low-rise housing stock of Queens, often regarded as the most ethnically and linguistically diverse place in the world.

To celebrate the installation, The Architectural League will host a reception and discussion on Thursday, November 9. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., followed at 7:00 p.m. by a conversation on the changing residential landscape of Queens and the appeal of the spectacular vernacular between Rafael Herrin-Ferri and Joseph Heathcott.

Rafael Herrin-Ferri is a Spanish-born architect/artist raised in Ithaca, New York. He received a B.Arch from Cornell University in 1996 and has lived and worked in San Francisco and Barcelona before settling in New York City in 2003. He is currently a Senior Architect at Studio Joseph and lives with his wife and daughter in Sunnyside, Queens.

Joseph Heathcott is an educator and urbanist. He is an Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Design at The New School and recent past President of the Society for American City and Regional Planning History. He held Mellon Distinguished Fellow at the Princeton University School of Architecture in 2016 the U.S. Fulbright Distinguished Chair for the United Kingdom in 2010-11.

The exhibition is open to the public on Friday afternoons between October 20 and December 15, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. No reservations required.
